Product Overview

Swagelok 40G Series 2-Way Instrumentation Ball Valve - 1/4 in. Swagelok Tube Fitting Ends, 3000 PSIG, 316 Stainless Steel

Condition

Used, sourced from a government research facility. Sold individually; the photographs show one representative valve from the group, so markings on other pieces are not guaranteed to match it exactly. On the valve photographed, one flat of the 316 stainless body carries the factory stamps - the Swagelok script wordmark, 316 and 799768001 stamped side by side on one line, SS-43GS4, and the pressure block reading 3000 PSIG at 100F (206 BAR at 37C) and 300F at 2500 PSIG (148C at 172 BAR). The opposite flat carries a hand-stamped USN property mark, applied by a user rather than by Swagelok. Body flats show fine machining lines and light surface scratches. Both tube fitting end connections are bright with clean, undamaged threads. The black lever handle is intact, molded with the Swagelok wordmark and flow arrow, and shows scuffs and a tan residue patch consistent with the tape residue noted on some handles in this group. Some valves in the group show wrench marks. Valve action is smooth and the threads check out. Evaluation was visual inspection only - function testing was not performed, and no pressure, leak, or flow testing was done. Nuts and ferrules are not included - order Swagelok set SS-400-SET separately if you need them.

Product Overview

The Swagelok SS-43GS4 is a one-piece, 2-way straight-pattern instrumentation ball valve from the 40G Series, built to shut off a 1/4 in. OD tubing run with a quarter turn of the lever. Both ends are Swagelok two-ferrule compression tube fitting connections, not pipe thread, so the valve drops straight into an existing 1/4 in. tubing layout without adapters. Body and wetted parts are 316 stainless steel; packing is modified PTFE and UHMWPE. The published rating is 3000 PSIG at 100F with a Cv of 1.4 and a 0.187 in. orifice, and the derate figure stamped on the body itself reads 300F at 2500 PSIG. It is the compact manual shutoff that analytical benches, gas manifolds, and pilot-scale rigs are usually built around, and this group came out of government service still marked from its last posting.

Key Features

  • Body and wetted parts: 316 stainless steel
  • Connections: 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting, both ends (requires 1/4 in. OD tubing)
  • Pressure rating: 3000 PSIG at 100F (206 BAR at 37C), stamped on the body
  • Derated figure stamped on the body: 300F at 2500 PSIG (148C at 172 BAR)
  • Temperature range: -65 to 300F (-53 to 148C)
  • Flow coefficient (Cv): 1.4
  • Orifice size: 0.187 in. (4.7 mm)
  • Packing: modified PTFE / UHMWPE
  • One-piece body, straight pattern, 2-way shutoff
  • Standard black lever handle with molded Swagelok wordmark and flow arrow
  • Body marking on the photographed piece: 316 799768001, SS-43GS4, plus a hand-stamped USN on the reverse flat

Applications

  • Lab technician plumbing a gas chromatography manifold who needs a compact isolation valve between the regulator and the column oven
  • Instrumentation engineer building a sampling loop in 1/4 in. stainless tubing and wanting a quarter-turn shutoff without breaking to pipe thread
  • Pilot plant or research shop assembling a high-pressure test stand for air, nitrogen, or CO2 service
  • Maintenance tech replacing a seized shutoff in an environmental monitoring cabinet that was originally built with Swagelok fittings throughout

Frequently Asked Questions

What tubing and fittings do I need to install this?

It takes 1/4 in. OD tubing on both ends through the Swagelok two-ferrule compression system, not NPT. Nuts and ferrules are not included with these valves - the photos show the bare male fitting bodies. If your tubing ends are not already swaged, or you want fresh hardware, order Swagelok set SS-400-SET. An NPT connection needs a separate adapter.

What is the USN stamp on the body?

It is a hand-stamped property mark on the flat opposite the factory stamps, not a Swagelok marking and not a part number or rating. Our records have this group sourced from a government research facility, which is consistent with a stamp of that kind. It has no bearing on the valve's specification - the Swagelok stamps for the part number and pressure rating are on the other face.

Is this the special-clean or latch-lock variant?

No to both. This is the standard SS-43GS4 with the standard lever handle. Oxygen service or semiconductor-grade purity calls for the SS-43GS4-SC11 special-clean version, and lockout-tagout duty calls for the latch-lock SS-43GS4-LL. Not confirmed whether these units received any cleaning beyond standard, so treat them as standard-clean.

Can the internal seals be replaced if they are worn?

The one-piece body construction makes internal seal service difficult without specialized tooling, so plan on using the valve as it comes. Cycle the handle and check the action before you put it into anything critical. These were evaluated by visual inspection only - no function testing, and no pressure or seat leak test.

What am I actually taking on with a used valve like this?

You are getting a used, government-surplus 316 stainless Swagelok valve that has been looked over, not pressure tested. The photos are the spec for the piece photographed: bright end threads, machining lines and light scratches on the body flats, a scuffed handle with some residue, and a hand-stamped USN mark. What has not been done is a leak, seat, or flow test, so bench check it and prove the seat before it goes into a line that matters. What you get in exchange is a name-brand instrumentation valve with a stamped 3000 PSIG rating, bought one or two at a time instead of a mystery bag from an auction lot. This item clears the free-shipping line on its own, and orders leave our Idaho warehouse the same or next business day.

Somebody once took a stamp set to a quarter-inch Swagelok and put USN into the stainless, and the valve outlasted whatever rig it was bolted into. Give it a bench check and a fresh set of ferrules, and it will go back to doing the one quiet job it has always done.
