Before you order, know which memory type your application needs. ROMless parts (such as the 8039) run from external memory. EPROM and one-time-programmable parts (most PIC16C parts, 68705) are programmed once or erased under UV. Flash parts (PIC16F) reprogram in circuit. A part with factory mask ROM carries someone else's program; some families (8048, 8051) can ignore the internal ROM and run from external memory, but most mask-ROM parts only suit the product they were made for.
