Thyristors: SCRs, Triacs and Thyristor Modules

Thyristors are the switches of power control. An SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) conducts one way once its gate is triggered and keeps conducting until the current falls below its holding current, which makes it the part in phase-controlled DC motor drives, industrial power controllers, battery chargers and crowbar protection. A triac conducts both ways and handles AC loads such as lamp dimmers, heaters and small motors.

This page runs from sensitive-gate TO-92 SCRs and TO-220 triacs to stud-mount SCRs and dual thyristor modules for industrial drives. To replace one, match type (SCR or triac), package and mounting, then voltage and current at or above the original. Sensitive-gate parts trigger on much less gate current: a standard-gate part may not fire in a sensitive-gate circuit, and a sensitive-gate part in a standard-gate circuit can false-trigger, so replace like with like.

Makers include General Electric, Motorola, NJS - New Jersey Semiconductor, RCA, Westinghouse, Powerex, and Teccor.
