Product Overview
MJE225 is a silicon NPN power transistor from Motorola's MJE plastic power line, made for general-purpose amplifier and switching work. It sits in the TO-126 package, with a mounting hole for a heatsink and a metal mounting plate tied to the collector.
Key Features
- NPN silicon power transistor
- VCEO 60 V, VCBO 80 V, VEBO 7 V
- Collector current 4 A continuous, 8 A peak
- Power dissipation 15 W at 25 C case temperature, 1.5 W in free air at 25 C
- TO-126 plastic package with mounting hole; mounting plate common to the collector
- Pinout: 1 emitter, 2 collector, 3 base
Applications
- Driver stages ahead of larger output transistors in audio amplifiers
- Switching relays, solenoids and small DC motors from a logic or microcontroller output
- Pass element in small linear supplies and regulators bolted to a chassis or heatsink
- Repair of older boards whose parts list calls for MJE225
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the metal mounting plate need to be insulated from the heatsink?
It does whenever the heatsink is not meant to sit at collector voltage. The mounting plate is common to the collector, so a grounded heatsink or chassis needs an insulating pad and a shoulder washer on the screw.
Larger orders lower the price per piece; the price-break table on this page has the details.
MJE was the prefix Motorola gave its plastic power transistors, and this TO-126 is the pocket edition: one screw hole and no wasted plastic.
