STMicroelectronics was formed in 1987 when Italy's SGS Microelettronica and France's Thomson Semiconducteurs merged as SGS-Thomson. The company took the STMicroelectronics name in 1998. ST makes power transistors, voltage regulators, op amps, logic, memory and microcontrollers.

How to spot one: the ST logo, with L78 numbers on positive regulators and L79 on negative ones. Many ST parts carry industry-standard numbers (LM, TL, MJE, 74HC), so match the full number on the part.
