The TIP42C is the 100 V grade of the TIP42 PNP power series, the heaviest of the TIP parts at 6.0 A continuous and 65 W (onsemi's published TIP42C data).

The representative unit photographed reads TIP42C on the black face, with the Motorola batwing and 605 stamped under it and a small circular factory stamp lettered MEXICO around its rim sitting above the part number. 605 is left as it was found: the published data behind this page carries no decode for these stamped codes, so it is a marking string here and not a date. The tab is bare and flat with the mounting hole clear, the back of the tab photographs a dull red-brown, and the three leads are full length, straight and bright, with a fleck of pale residue at one lead root.

Both parts are PNP TO-220 devices at the same C grade of 100 V VCEO, and there the similarity stops: onsemi's published data gives the TIP42C 6.0 A continuous and 65 W, and the TIP32C 3.0 A continuous and 40 W. Going down that step halves the current headroom and takes a third off the dissipation, which is the difference between a stage that idles warm and one that does not survive the first fault. Going the other way, a TIP42C in a TIP32C position is the bigger device and its 3 MHz fT and 30 minimum hFE are worth checking against the drive your circuit provides.
