The TIP31B is the 80 V grade of the TIP31 NPN power series, B being the third rung of a ladder that runs 40 V unlettered, 60 V for A, 80 V for B and 100 V for C (onsemi's published tip31a-d data, which covers TIP31A/B/C and TIP32A/B/C).

My board calls for a TIP31C. Will the B do?
Check the rail first. Per onsemi's published data the two parts share everything but the breakdown grade: 3.0 A continuous, 40 W at TC = 25 degC, same TO-220 body. The suffix is the whole difference, and B is 80 V VCEO against the C part's 100 V. On a 24 V or 48 V rail with modest inductive kick that gap rarely matters; on a design that was specified at 100 V for a reason, it does, and no amount of heatsink makes it up. The body of the unit photographed is stamped TIP31B, so the grade is on the part and not just in our description. What ships is the transistor alone, with no heatsink, insulator or hardware.
