Product Overview
The TIP29C is the 100 V grade of the TIP29 NPN power series, and at 1.0 A continuous and 30 W it is the lightest-duty part in the TIP group (onsemi's published TIP29C data).

The representative unit photographed reads TIP29C across the black face with the Motorola batwing and 737 on the line below it, and a round factory stamp sits above the part number, too soft in these photos to read out. 737 is a string and stays one here: nothing in the published data we work from decodes these stamped codes, so we will not hand you a manufacture date we cannot source. The tab is bare with a clear mounting hole, the back of it photographs a dull red-brown, and the three leads are full length and unbent with a grey, lightly mottled finish rather than a bright mirror.

The C says 100 volts, so can I use it where a TIP31C went?
The suffix reads the same and the current rating does not. Across TIP29/30, TIP31/32 and TIP41/42 the C suffix means 100 V VCEO, so on voltage this part stands with the rest. On current it does not: onsemi's published TIP29C data gives 1.0 A continuous and 30 W, while onsemi's published data gives the TIP31B 3.0 A and 40 W and the TIP42C 6.0 A and 65 W. A TIP29C dropped into a socket sized for a 3 A part will hold the voltage off and then run out of current, so size it by the amps and not by the letter. What ships is the transistor alone, with no heatsink, insulator or hardware.
