The Connector That Refused to Look Familiar
Two engineers, Neill and Concelman, gave the world a quarter-turn bayonet plug. The BNC went everywhere. Every oscilloscope. Every bench. Every hand learned its twist.
Then physics labs needed thousands of volts on those same benches. The first answer, the MHV, was a high-voltage plug in a BNC’s body. It could be forced onto a BNC. Unplugged, its ground let go first, leaving a live pin near the open end.
The danger was not the voltage. It was the resemblance.
So the SHV was built to look wrong. The insulator stands proud of the shell. The pin sits out of fingertip reach. The genders are flipped so no BNC will take it. It became the standard of nuclear instrumentation.
This Kings KV-99-15 came out of a government research facility. Used, clean, one left. $4.79.
