Product Overview
Banner SM2A312LVQD is a MINI-BEAM series retroreflective photoelectric sensor. It emits a visible red LED beam at 650 nm and detects objects by monitoring whether that beam returns from a paired retro-reflector. When an object interrupts the beam path, the sensor switches its solid-state output. The wide AC supply range - 24 to 240 VAC - simplifies integration into existing industrial power systems without a dedicated DC supply. Light-ON and Dark-ON modes are selectable, and sensitivity is adjustable via an onboard potentiometer. The M18 threaded barrel and rectangular housing provide flexible mounting options. IP67 and NEMA 1, 2, 3, 3S, 4, 4X, 6, 12, and 13 ratings protect the unit in wash-down and harsh plant environments.

Applications
- Maintenance tech swapping a failed sensor on a conveyor line - mounts the SM2A312LVQD in the existing M18 bracket, connects the 3-pin micro QD cable, and adjusts the potentiometer to re-establish reliable object detection without pulling new power wiring
- Automation integrator wiring a new palletizing or packaging system into a PLC - selects this sensor for its wide AC voltage input, eliminating the need for a separate DC power rail at the sensor location
- Facility engineer adding presence detection at a door, gate, or chute where a reflector can be placed on the opposite surface and AC power is already available at the panel
- Maker or lab builder running an AC-powered detection circuit for a custom machine - uses the selectable Light-ON/Dark-ON mode and potentiometer to tune the trigger point without additional signal conditioning hardware
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this sensor require a separate retro-reflector, and is one included?
Yes, a retro-reflector is required for this sensing mode - the sensor transmits a beam and waits for it to return from the reflector; without one, detection cannot function. A retro-reflector is not included with this unit.
Will this work on a DC power supply?
No. The SM2A312LVQD is designed for 24 to 240 VAC only. It is not compatible with DC-only supplies. For a DC application, the SM312LVQD variant operates on 10-30 VDC with bipolar NPN/PNP outputs.
Is this sensor suitable for detecting shiny or reflective objects?
This is a non-polarized retroreflective sensor, which can have difficulty distinguishing between the retro-reflector and a shiny object surface. For reliable detection of highly reflective targets, the SM2A312LVAGQD - a polarized variant with a 50mm to 2m sensing range - is the appropriate choice.
What cable or connector does this sensor use?
It requires a 3-pin 1/2-inch micro quick-disconnect cable. The connector face with gold contacts is visible on the unit. A mating cable is not included.
Can this sensor be used in a safety application to protect personnel?
No. This sensor lacks the self-checking redundant circuitry required for personnel safety applications. It is intended for standard object detection in industrial automation, not as a safety device.
Retroreflective sensing earns its place on busy lines because you only have to aim at one thing - put the reflector where the beam should land, and the sensor does the rest. This one is ready to go back to work.
