The 2N6491 is the PNP end of the 2N6487/2N6488 NPN and 2N6490/2N6491 PNP complementary silicon plastic power family, rated 15 A and 75 W in a TO-220AB body (onsemi's published 2n6487-d data).

The representative unit photographed reads 2N6491 across the black face with the Motorola batwing and 615 stamped below it, and a round factory stamp sits above the part number whose lettering these photos do not resolve, so we do not quote it. 615 is reproduced exactly as found and nothing more is claimed for it: no published Motorola or onsemi document behind this page decodes those digits, so it is a marking string and not a date. The tab is bare metal with the mounting hole clear, the reverse of the tab photographs a deep red-brown, and the three leads are heavy and full length, grey with a little dark residue where they leave the plastic.

Will it really pass 15 amps, and what do I pair it with?

Read the gain figure before you plan around the current. onsemi's published data gives IC of 15 A and PD of 75 W at TC = 25 degC, but hFE is specified as 20 to 150 at 5.0 A and only 5.0 minimum at 15 A - at the top of the range the base current stops being a rounding error and your driver stage has to supply it. The 75 W figure is at a 25 degC case as well, which is a heatsink specification and not a promise about your chassis. For the NPN side, the published complement is the 2N6488 at the same 80 V, from the same sheet that covers 2N6487/2N6488 NPN and 2N6490/2N6491 PNP; we are not shipping one with this. What ships is the transistor by itself - no heatsink, no insulator, no mounting hardware - and no pin or tab assignment is quoted here because the data we work from does not publish one.
