Product Overview

A silicon PNP epitaxial-base power transistor from the TIP30 series, built for power amplifier and high-speed switching work. The TIP30A is the 60 V member, housed in the TO-220 package with a mounting tab for a heatsink. This one carries the SGS logo.

Key Features

  • Polarity: PNP, silicon epitaxial base
  • VCEO 60 V, VCBO 60 V, VEBO 5.0 V
  • Collector current 1.0 A continuous, 3.0 A peak
  • Power dissipation 30 W at 25 C case temperature
  • hFE 40 minimum at 0.2 A; 15 to 75 at 1.0 A (VCE 4 V)
  • Transition frequency (fT) 3.0 MHz
  • Package TO-220, pinout base-collector-emitter, tab tied to the collector

Applications

  • High-side switch on a positive rail: emitter to the supply, collector to a relay coil, lamp or small motor drawing up to 1 A
  • Replacing a failed TIP30A in the driver or output stage of an older amplifier or bench supply
  • The PNP side of a small push-pull output stage in a hobby audio or motor-drive build

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the pinout?

Base, collector, emitter, left to right, with the marked face toward you and the leads pointing down. The metal tab is the collector, so insulate it from a grounded heatsink unless the collector sits at ground.

Does it need a heatsink?

The 30 W rating holds only with the case kept at 25 C, which takes a heatsink. In free air it handles a small fraction of that, so size the heatsink to the power the circuit actually dissipates.

How much base current does it need at 1 A?

At least 67 mA with 4 V from collector to emitter, since gain can be as low as 15 at 1 A.

The TIP30A is still made today under the ST logo; this one wears the older SGS mark. A restoration that wants the old mark on the board can have it.
