Product Overview
Analog Devices 5B37-S-05 is a plug-in isolated thermocouple input module from the 5B Series. It mounts on a 5B backplane or mounting card, takes a Type S thermocouple across 0 C to +1750 C, and delivers a 0 V to +5 V output, with cold-junction compensation handled through the AC1361 CJC sensor that 5B backplanes and mounting cards supply. The 5B37 line is obsolete at Analog Devices.
Key Features
- Model 5B37-S-05: Type S thermocouple input, 0 C to +1750 C (+32 F to +3182 F)

- CSA, CE and FM approval marks printed on the label
Applications
- Filling a Type S slot on a 5B backplane in a furnace, kiln or heat-treat control rack
- Bringing a platinum thermocouple from a glass or ceramics process into a 0 to 5 V PLC or data-acquisition input
- Holding a spare for an installed 5B system now that the module can no longer be ordered from the maker
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the module need from the backplane?
A +5 V supply held within 5%, drawing 30 mA, and the AC1361 cold-junction sensor that 5B backplanes and mounting cards carry.
Will it read a Type K or Type J thermocouple?
No. The -S-05 is scaled for Type S only. The 5B37 family covers J, K, T, E, R, S and B, each as its own model with its own range.
What happens if the thermocouple opens?
The output drives upscale, in 10 seconds. A 47 Mohm resistor across terminals 1 and 3 changes that to a downscale response.
What input and output is this used module set for?
Its own label sets it: an isolated Type S thermocouple input across 0 C to +1750 C, and a 0 V to +5 V output. It is sold used, and the photos are of the actual stock.
Type S wire pairs platinum-rhodium against pure platinum, the pairing chosen for heat that wears out base-metal thermocouples. The module turns its millivolts into a signal a controller can read; running the wire to the hot zone is your end of the job.
