Product Overview
Part of the Bourns Multifuse MF-NSMF series, the MF-NSMF200-2 is a resettable polymer PTC overcurrent protector in a 1206 chip body. It carries 2.00 A without tripping, trips at 4.00 A and is rated 6 V maximum, which puts it on 5 V and 3.3 V rails such as USB ports, power-input jacks and logic supplies.
Key Features
- Hold current 2.00 A, trip current 4.00 A (at 23 C)
- Maximum voltage 6 V; maximum fault current 100 A
- Maximum time to trip 1.00 s at 8.0 A
- Resistance 0.02 ohm minimum; R1max 0.085 ohm
- Typical power dissipation 0.7 W
- 1206 surface-mount body: 3.00 to 3.50 mm long, 1.40 to 1.80 mm wide, 0.70 to 1.60 mm high
Applications
- Replacing a damaged A-marked 1206 PPTC on a USB port or 5 V input
- Adding resettable protection to the power jack of a microcontroller or LED project
- Guarding a bench prototype's 3.3 V or 5 V rail through bring-up, when solder bridges and shorted leads happen
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it reset by itself after a trip?
Yes. While the fault and the supply are present it stays tripped and passes only a small current. Remove the power, let it cool, and it returns to low resistance with nothing to replace.
What do the 2.00 A hold and 4.00 A trip figures mean in practice?
At 23 C it carries 2.00 A continuously without tripping and trips at 4.00 A. At 8.0 A it trips within 1.00 s. Both currents fall as the board runs hotter.
Can it protect a 12 V rail?
No. Its maximum voltage is 6 V, so it belongs on 5 V and 3.3 V rails. A 12 V supply needs a resettable fuse rated for that voltage.
A chip smaller than a grain of rice stands between a 5 V input and whatever gets plugged into it. Put it first in line, where the current enters the board.
