Product Overview
STMicroelectronics TDA2050V is a monolithic Class-AB audio power amplifier in a 5-pin vertical Pentawatt package. Capable of driving up to 35 W RMS into 4-ohm loads or 32 W into 8 ohms, it provides low harmonic distortion across the audio frequency band for high-fidelity speaker systems and active studio monitors. Internal thermal shutdown and output-to-ground short-circuit protection protect the device against output faults.
Key Features
- Output Power: Up to 35 W RMS into 4 Ω (THD = 10%, VS = ±18 V); 32 W into 8 Ω (THD = 10%, VS = ±22 V)
- Music Power: 50 W into 4 Ω over 1 second (VS = 22.5 V, f = 1 kHz)
- Low Distortion: 0.05% typical THD (VS = ±22 V, PO = 0.1 to 15 W, RL = 8 Ω)
- Supply Voltage Range: Dual split supply ±4.5 V to ±25 V (single supply 9 V to 50 V)
- Peak Output Current: 5 A internal current limit
- Integrated Protection: Internal thermal shutdown and output short-circuit protection
- Package: Pentawatt-5 Vertical (Pentawatt V) through-hole package with metal tab
Applications
- Replacing blown output stages in active desktop monitor speakers and subwoofers.
- Building compact DIY hi-fi stereo amplifiers and guitar practice amps on perfboard.
- Upgrading or repairing legacy modular solid-state audio equipment using split-rail power.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the TDA2050V run from a single power supply?
Yes. The device operates on either a dual split supply from ±4.5 V to ±25 V or a single supply from 9 V to 50 V with capacitive output coupling.
Does this IC require an external heatsink?
Yes. Because the device dissipates up to 25 W under heavy loads, mounting it to an appropriate heatsink with thermal compound is required for reliable operation.
How many audio channels does one IC drive?
Each IC is a single-channel mono amplifier, so a stereo setup requires two chips.
The TDA2050 was the workhorse behind a generation of desktop audio and DIY practice amps before everything went digital and surface-mount. Bolt it to a solid heatsink, wire up your rails, and let clean analog power do the talking.
