Product Overview

The MC7805CT is a monolithic fixed positive 5 V regulator in the three-lead TO-220 package, from the MC7800 series.

There are 103 of them on the shelf, sold each. The representative unit photographed is a Motorola-branded original: the batwing logo is printed on the black body next to a round factory stamp, with MC on the first line, 7805CT on the second and QHJ851 on the third. Its three leads are tinned bright and cut to a short, flat-ended length rather than left full, which is the thing to check against your board before you order a handful; the tab is bare metal and the mounting hole is clear. The QHJ851 string we leave alone, because there is no Motorola-published marking guide behind the data we work from, so no date is read out of it here. Order a 7805CT from current production and it comes from onsemi, the successor to Motorola's semiconductor business, so the batwing under the ink on this one is not something a new part will bring you.

Key Features

  • Fixed positive 5 V output
  • Output current in excess of 1.0 A with adequate heatsinking; peak output current typ 2.2 A at TJ = 25 degC (per onsemi's published MC7800 series data)
  • No external components required (per onsemi)
  • Internal thermal overload protection, short-circuit current limiting, safe-area compensation (per onsemi)
  • Maximum input voltage 35 V for the 5 V through 18 V devices; TJ max +150 degC (per onsemi)
  • TO-220 package, CASE 221AB, indicated by the "T" suffix (per onsemi)
  • Through-hole mount, three leads, metal tab with mounting hole
  • "C" suffix: commercial junction-temperature grade, TJ = 0 degC to +125 degC (per onsemi)
  • Verify against onsemi's published MC7800 series data before designing in.

Applications

  • 5 V logic rails in linear bench and instrument supplies
  • Repair of legacy control boards built around a 7805
  • Regulated 5 V for microcontroller and sensor prototypes
  • Classroom demonstrations of linear regulation and dropout

Frequently Asked Questions

How many should I order?

Order the count the build calls for. There are 103 here, so if you are stocking a drawer as well as fixing one board, put both counts on the same order rather than coming back for the second. Shipping is $8 flat rate and free on orders over $28, so small parts like this ship smartest as part of a larger order.

Does it need a heatsink, and is the tab live?

onsemi's published MC7800 series data rates output current in excess of 1.0 A with adequate heatsinking, so the answer depends on your input-to-output drop and duty. Two things worth knowing before you bolt one down: that same data gives a TO-220 heatsink tab tied to pin 2, and for the positive MC7800 series it gives pin 2 as Ground. Verify the pin assignment and the tab connection against onsemi's published MC7800 series data before mounting to a chassis. On the unit photographed here the tab is bare metal and the mounting hole is clear, so it will take an ordinary TO-220 insulator kit; what ships is the regulator alone, with no mounting hardware or insulator included.

Tinned leads, a clean tab, and a Motorola batwing under the ink: the part that turned a wall wart into a working 5 V rail for a whole generation of boards.
