Product Overview

General Electric marked this D40C1, an NPN silicon Darlington power transistor designed for general purpose amplifier work where high gain is required. It sits in the TO-202 case: a plastic body, three in-line leads and a metal tab with a mounting hole. The D40C1 is out of production.

Key Features

  • NPN silicon Darlington, two stages of gain in one case
  • VCEO 30 V; VEBO 13 V
  • Collector current 0.5 A continuous, 1.0 A peak
  • DC current gain (hFE) 10,000 minimum at VCE 5.0 V, IC 200 mA
  • VCE(sat) 1.5 V and VBE(sat) 2.0 V at IC 500 mA, IB 0.5 mA
  • Power dissipation 6.25 W at a 25 °C case; junction and storage -55 °C to +150 °C

Applications

  • Driving a relay coil, lamp or small solenoid from a logic or op-amp output that can only supply a small base current
  • Putting a D40C1 back into an older amplifier or driver board that was built around one

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TO-202 the same as TO-220?

No. TO-202 is a separate case outline, and a TO-220 footprint or heatsink is not a guaranteed fit. Match the board to the TO-202 body and tab.

How much gain does a Darlington like this give?

The D40C1 is rated for an hFE of 10,000 minimum at 5.0 V and 200 mA. With two transistors stacked inside one case, a base current in the milliamp range can switch a load of a few hundred milliamps.

How much voltage does the D40C1 drop when switched on?

1.5 V collector to emitter at 500 mA with 0.5 mA of base current, so a load switched at that current gets the supply voltage less 1.5 V.

A Darlington does the work of two transistors in one case, and the D40C1 turns that into a 10,000 minimum gain on a small tabbed body. If an old driver board still has a D40C1-shaped gap in it, this is the part that fills it.
