Product Overview

NGI Norma Goerz Clamp-On Current Probe, 1000 A Range with a 1000:1 Current Output

Condition

Used, in great cosmetic condition with very little signs of actual use. Fully tested and confirmed to be in excellent working condition. In the photos the probe is the classic Norma layout: a black ribbed two-arm handle body with red shrouded split-core jaws, showing light handling marks and scuffs on the red jaw shells. Both plates are intact and fully legible. The black NORMA plate on the upper arm reads 1000 : 1, 0,05 ... 1000A, 1mA/1A, Kl 0,5, 48 ... 5000 Hz, Z <= 20 Ω, cos phi = 1 ... 0.1, L.Nr.: A 6805 01010, alongside a warning triangle and a boxed star 2 safety symbol. The white NGI plate on the lower arm reads Norma Goerz Instruments, 1711 Elmhurst Road, Elk Grove Village, IL 60007, with a phone and fax number. One photo shows the handles squeezed and the jaws standing open; the mating pole faces inside the red jaw tips are mottled with brown and grey staining, their lamination edges are nicked and scored, and the red plastic at the tips carries white abrasion marks and a small gouge. A molded P2 and P1 direction reference sits on the jaw housing.

Product Overview

This is a handheld clamp-on current probe from NGI, Norma Goerz Instruments of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, built on the split-core clamp design that lets you measure conductor current without breaking into the circuit. The nameplate gives the working numbers directly: a 1000 : 1 ratio producing 1 mA of output for every 1 A flowing through the jaws, a 0,05 A to 1000 A measuring range, a 48 Hz to 5000 Hz band, Kl 0,5 accuracy class, an insertion impedance of Z <= 20 Ω, and a power factor range of cos phi = 1 to 0.1. The list number stamped on that same plate is A 6805 01010. The red jaws snap around a cable or bus bar, the ribbed arms give a firm two-finger squeeze, and the low ratio output suits oscilloscope or data acquisition work where you want a scaled current signal rather than a shunt in the line.

Key Features

  • Measuring range: 0,05 A to 1000 A per the nameplate
  • Ratio: 1000 : 1
  • Output: 1 mA per 1 A of conductor current
  • Frequency range: 48 Hz to 5000 Hz
  • Accuracy class: Kl 0,5 (Class 0.5)
  • Insertion impedance: Z <= 20 Ω
  • Power factor range: cos phi = 1 to 0.1
  • List number on label: L.Nr. A 6805 01010
  • Construction: hinged split-core clamp, red shrouded jaws, ribbed black handle arms
  • Molded P2 and P1 direction reference on the jaw housing
  • Brand plates: NORMA spec plate plus NGI Norma Goerz Instruments identification plate

Applications

  • Power electronics technician capturing current waveforms on a scope without inserting a shunt in the load path
  • Motor shop tech checking running and starting current on industrial drives while the machine stays wired
  • Test engineer feeding a scaled 1 mA per amp signal into a data acquisition front end for a long load-recording run
  • Field service tech verifying nameplate draw on welders, heaters, and feeders where opening the conductor is not an option

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 1000 : 1 ratio actually give me at the output?

One milliamp out for every amp passing through the jaws, so 1000 A through the clamp puts out 1 A. That is a current output, not a voltage output, so confirm your scope, meter, or DAQ front end is set up for a current input or an appropriate burden before you connect it.

What frequency range is it rated for?

The nameplate specifies 48 Hz to 5000 Hz with a Kl 0,5 accuracy class and a cos phi range of 1 to 0.1. Behavior outside that stated band is not confirmed here, so verify against the Norma documentation before relying on it for a measurement.

What are the P1 and P2 marks molded on the jaw?

They are the primary-side direction reference cast into the jaw housing next to the hinge, with an arrow between them. Keep your orientation consistent from measurement to measurement and check the manufacturer documentation for the correct sense before you interpret phase or polarity.

What is included?

You get exactly what is shown in the photographs: the NGI Norma Goerz clamp-on current probe itself. The earlier listing text also mentions an output cable, and no cable appears in these photos, so message us to confirm the lead and connector before ordering if that matters for your setup. No case, no other accessories.

Why buy the single instrument here instead of chasing a surplus lot or an auction pallet?

Because you probably need one working current probe, not a crate of unknown ones. We sell the exact quantity you need, one piece for a repair, a bench, or a prototype, instead of forcing you into a lot of ten or fifty. Shipping is $8 flat rate and free over $28, and orders leave our Idaho warehouse the same or next business day.

The identification plate still lists a fax number in Elk Grove Village, from the days when measuring a thousand amps meant closing two red jaws around a cable and trusting the core to tell the truth. Snap it shut on your next conductor and go find out what the current is really doing.
