Product Overview
An N-channel junction field-effect transistor (JFET) carrying the Motorola circled logo and the JEDEC-registered number 2N4393, in the small three-lead metal can. A JFET conducts with the gate at zero volts and pinches the channel off as the gate is driven negative, which makes the 2N4393 a normally-on switch and a simple current limiter.
Key Features
- N-channel JFET, depletion mode
- Gate-source cutoff voltage VGS(off): -0.5 to -3 V
- Zero-gate-voltage drain current IDSS: 5 to 30 mA
- Drain-source on-resistance rDS(on): 100 ohm maximum
- Power dissipation: 1.8 W with the case at 25 C
- Package: TO-18 (TO-206AA) three-lead metal can
Applications
- Analog signal switches that pass a signal with the gate at zero and block it with negative gate bias
- Current limiters and constant-current sources with the gate tied to the source, where IDSS sets the current
- Repair of older analog equipment whose parts list calls for a 2N4393
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2N4393 an N-channel or a P-channel JFET?
N-channel. Current flows drain to source, and the gate is driven negative to turn it off.
Will this Motorola part stand in for a 2N4393 from another maker?
2N4393 is a JEDEC-registered number, so a 2N4393 from another maker is built to the same registered limits.
The circled batwing printed on the side of this can is Motorola's mark. Whatever signal this 2N4393 switches next, it switches with that logo riding along inside the chassis.
