Motorola 2N3054A NPN Silicon Power Transistor, Potted in Epoxy with Long Color-Coded Leads

Condition

Unused, new-old-stock. These came out of our own shelf stock and the photographs show one representative piece, not the whole quantity. The black epoxy block is glossy and unmarked apart from a small side label reading EE-AM 91248, the yellow-faced base board is clean, and the three color-coded lead wires are straight with cleanly cut ends carrying no solder and no sign of prior installation. The transistor can recessed into the top face carries the Motorola M logo and reads 2N3054, 2N3054A, 7739, which is a 1977 date code in Motorola's usual four-digit format. Against the ruler the block measures approximately 1-1/2 inches long by 7/8 inch wide and roughly 3/4 inch thick, with leads running about 17 inches.

This is a Motorola 2N3054 / 2N3054A silicon NPN power transistor in its round metal power can, dropped face-up into a rectangular epoxy block and wired out to three long flexible leads. The potting turns an ordinary chassis-mount device into a self-contained module you can drop into a box, tie down, and wire wherever the leads reach, with no mounting flange, no insulating washer, and no drilled heat sink required. A typed spec card was photographed with these and is shown here: it lists the device as 2N3054A silicon NPN, Vce 60 V, Ic 4 A, Pd 75 W, and hFE 25 dB at Ic 5000 mA, with a bottom-view pinout giving red as collector, orange as emitter, and green as base. Those figures are what the card says, not measurements we took, so verify against the datasheet before use. The 2N3054 is a long-serving general purpose NPN power device that shows up in audio output and driver stages, linear supply pass elements, relay and solenoid drivers, and legacy industrial control boards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which lead is which?

The typed card photographed with these gives the pinout as a bottom view of the can: red is the collector, orange is the emitter, and green is the base. The leads on the piece we photographed follow that color set. Ring them out before you power anything up, as you would with any surplus assembly.

Is the device really a 2N3054A?

The can visible through the recess in the epoxy is stamped with the Motorola M logo and reads 2N3054 on the first line, 2N3054A on the second, and 7739 on the third. Motorola marked the base type and the A suffix together on this family, and 7739 reads as a 1977 date code. Those are the markings on the photographed piece, and we are not guaranteeing identical date codes across the rest of the stock.

Can I run it at the full 75 W the card lists?

Treat the card figures as the ratings for the bare device. Epoxy is an insulator, not a heat sink, so the potting works against you thermally and the module has no metal mounting face to bolt down. Derate for your own thermal path and verify against the datasheet before committing it to a design.

What is the EE-AM 91248 label on the side?

It is a number applied by whoever built the encapsulated assembly, printed on a small label on one long face. It is not the Motorola part number and not our stock code. We cannot trace it to an original equipment listing, so it is offered as an observation for anyone matching an existing module in the field.
