Product Overview
Motorola MC14040BCP is a 12-bit binary ripple counter in a 16-pin plastic DIP package. It accepts one clock input and produces 12 buffered binary outputs, each at half the frequency of the previous stage - dividing an input clock by ratios from 2 to 4,096. Operates across a wide CMOS supply range of 3V to 18V. Part of the 4000-series CMOS logic family. No longer manufactured under the Motorola brand, making original NOS units sought after for restoration and legacy repair work.
Key Features
- 12-bit binary ripple counter - 12 independent buffered outputs

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this compatible with TTL (74-series) logic?
Not a direct drop-in. CMOS and TTL have different voltage threshold requirements. Level shifting is required to interface the MC14040BCP with TTL logic families.
What is a ripple counter and does it matter for my application?
In a ripple counter, the output of each stage clocks the next, introducing a small cumulative propagation delay. This is acceptable for frequency division and timing applications but makes it unsuitable for high-speed synchronous logic where all bits must change simultaneously.
Is this the same as the CD4040B?
Functionally equivalent. The CD4040B is the industry-standard equivalent produced by other manufacturers including Texas Instruments and RCA. The MC14040BCP is the Motorola-branded version of the same 4040B function.
Has this been stored in anti-static packaging?
Sourced as NOS through our surplus and legacy supplier network. CMOS devices are ESD-sensitive - handle with standard ESD precautions during installation.
Original Motorola-branded 4000-series CMOS ICs are no longer in production. Verify pin-out against the MC14040B datasheet before installation.
