Capacitors - Guess which MF means what? MYSTERY SOLVED!

It's not uncommon for capacitor markings to be confusing. For starters, capacitor values are typically shown in microfarads (MF), but the capacitor designation is usually in millifarads (mfd) or microfarad decoupling capacitors are often marked with "UF." Confused? Well don't worry - Check out this WestFlorida Components article "Guess which MF means what? MYSTERY SOLVED!"

MF and MFD capacitor values differ by a factor of 100. If you see an MF capacitor with a value between 0.001 and 0.29 µF, the capacitor is probably in microfarads; if it's 30 to 999 or 1000µF, then kilo-microfarads (kM). Similarly, if you see an MFD capacitor with a value between 0.0001 and 0.0029 µF, it's probably in microfarads; if it's 300 to 3000µF, then kilo-microfarads (kM).
